The OnePlus Open might be one of the best first foldable attempts from any major smartphone manufacturer, if not the absolute best. Despite its underdog start to making smartphones, OnePlus has rarely had major faux pas when it comes to its hardware (or even software).
For such a good foldable, you’d expect its sequel to waste no time coming to market, but that’s not the case. Normally, the OnePlus Open 2 would have launched in October, but there was no word of it, and we know it isn’t coming this year at all. However, we do have a little bit of a glimpse into when we might be able to expect it.
The Oppo Find N5 Should Launch Before March Ends; The OnePlus Open 2 Is Expected To Follow That
Oppo and OnePlus are two companies that are very closely related, thanks to sharing the same parent company. Because of that, a lot of devices that OnePlus eventually releases are based on devices that were released by Oppo prior to that. For the most part, though, consumers don’t really notice, mostly because of the regions each OEM serves.
The fantastic OnePlus Open was based on the Oppo Find N3—that’ll become pretty obvious to you the moment you look at photos of the two—and that tradition is going to remain for the launch of the Oppo Find N5 (skipping “4” because of tetraphobia). That means that we’re not going to see the OnePlus Open 2 until we see the Oppo Find N5.
The good thing is, we have a bit of a look at when the Oppo Find N5 will be launching. This is coming from Digital Chat Station on Weibo, who has cemented himself as one of the most reliable tipsters in the game. It seems that the device will be coming in Q1, which means before March ends as the worst-case scenario. It could be earlier though, and the OnePlus Open 2 could follow about a month after that.
We Know A Little Bit About The Spec Sheet For The OnePlus Open 2
Thankfully, the OnePlus Open isn’t a complete mystery. We know that it is going to come with quite a few improvements. For one, there’ll be a Snapdragon 8 Elite inside, as expected, but OnePlus will finally opt for wireless charging and up the water resistance to IPX8.
It is going to get lighter and thinner, which is the natural thing to do considering the way most foldables went this year. The battery is almost certain to get bigger, as Digital Chat Station says it will have “longer battery life”. There will also be a 50MP periscope telephoto camera, likely with 3x optical zoom.
When you put all of that together, it really sounds like the kind of smartphone that’s worth waiting for. I have very few doubts that OnePlus is going to disappoint in that regard.
The OnePlus 13 Gets Its Launch Date For The Global Stage And It’s January 7th
The OnePlus Open 2 is still uncertain in terms of its launch, so let’s talk about something more concrete. If you’ve been salivating for the OnePlus 13 ever since its launch in China about two months ago, then you’ll be glad to know that you don’t need to wait more than another month before you’ll be able to get your hands on it. It’s official that the OnePlus 13 and OnePlus 13R will be launching on January 7th.
