The Toshiba Fire TV Edition ties for No. 3 in our Best TVs of 2022 and Best Smart TVs of 2022 ratings. The Japanese firm traces its history back to the 19th century when it started making telegraph equipment and lightbulbs, and produced Japan’s first color TV in 1960. Today the Toshiba TV brand is controlled by Chinese manufacturer Hisense under a deal signed by the two companies in 2017, even though the Toshiba unit operates as a separate entity. Toshiba’s specialty today is the Fire TV using the platform developed by Amazon.

Toshiba is on its third generation of Fire TVs. The first two, the V35 and C350 series, get good marks for design and affordability. But reviewers consider their picture quality lackluster when it comes to factors like brightness and contrast. The newest M550 Series launched in 2021, however, has made impressive strides in picture quality. Some professional reviewers say the M550 Toshiba Fire TV matches or beats many high-end rivals. The M550 has also wins over reviewers with its improved sound quality (even without an external sound bar) and features for gaming, including its technology known as 480 Motion Rate, which refreshes up to 480 images per second to reduce blur and improve clarity for fast action content.
The older Toshiba Fire TV models are still available with the same user-friendly features such as the Alexa-controlled Fire TV platform and can be had for attractive prices, especially if you want a smaller TV. The older models deliver less-than-optimal performance if you’re in a dark room or one with bright sunlight, and some reviewers say the legs can fit awkwardly and wobble.
Toshiba’s Fire TVs range from 32-inch high definition (HD) for a suggested retail price as low as $199 to the newest 75-inch Class M550 with a suggested retail price of $1,399.99, with prices often discounted. In between these sizes, Toshiba has TV sets at 43, 50, 55, and 65 inches. Here are the suggested prices:
- V35 Series: $199.99 (32-inch) and $289.99 (43-inch)
- C350 Series: $329.99 (43-inch), $429.99 (50-inch), $469.99 (55-inch) , $599.99 (65-inch) or $899.99 (75-inch)
- M550 Series: $799.99 (55-inch), $999.99 (65-inch) or $1,399.99 (75-inch)
Toshiba has 10 Fire TV models with screens ranging from 32 to 75 inches:
- The V35 series with an HD (720p) picture has a bezel-less design, picture optimizer, LCD screen, Fire TV remote with Alexa, and a stand. The 32-inch model is 28.2 x 16.9 x 3.4 inches without the stand and weighs 8.6 pounds with the stand. The 43-inch model is 36.6 x 22 x 3.4 inches and weighs 14.3 pounds with the stand. Like all the Toshiba Fire TV models, these have Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity built-in.
- Toshiba’s C350 Series has a 4K UHD LCD screen and features including picture-in-picture as well as virtual surround sound with Toshiba’s DTS Virtual:X technology. These models start with a 43-inch screen, which measures 37.9 x 22 x 2.9 inches without the stand and weighs 15.9 pounds. The 75-inch set has dimensions of 66 x 37.8 x 3.3 inches and weighs 59.7 pounds. You can also get models with screens of 50, 55, and 65 inches.
- The M550 Series is Toshiba’s newest line and adds a feature known as 480 Motion Rate, which refreshes up to 480 images per second to reduce blur and improve clarity for fast action content. The 55-inch model measures 48.5 x 28.1 x 3 inches without the stand and weighs 32.4 pounds with the stand. The 65-inch version is 57 x 35.7 x 10.9 inches and weighs 42.1 pounds, while the 75-inch set is 65.9 x 41.4 x 14.4 inches with a weight of 62.6 pounds.

Toshiba Fire TV vs. Samsung QN85A
The Samsung QN85A, which features quantum-dot or QLED picture technology (Samsung calls its latest version NEO QLED), gets strong ratings from professional reviewers in just about every category, blowing the older Toshiba V35 and C350 models out of the water, albeit at a much higher price tag. The early reviews on the M550, released in 2021, have been promising, and some reviewers say it’s possibly the best TV for the money, with picture and sound rivaling some high-end competitors, good gaming functionality, and prices below those of the QN85A.

Toshiba Fire TV vs. LG G1
The LG G1 offers impressive picture quality for just about any activity from watching movies and sports to gaming with OLED (organic light-emitting diode) technology, which is on many high-end models. OLED is clearly the technology of the future and delivers stunning performance, but has a heftier price tag: This 65-inch LG model carries a suggested price of almost $3,000. If you’re not ready to fork out the money for an OLED TV, reviewers say the Toshiba M550 is the next best thing, with one of the best LCD TVs available. You can save even more with the older Fire TV models but you will be getting just a basic TV.
These Toshiba Fire TV models are available:

- C350 Series 4K: 43-, 50-, 55-, 65-, and 75-inch models
