Toyota’s Latest Off-Road Models Are Climbing to the Top of the Sales Charts

Toyota has long been the leader in small and midsize trucks, with even the older Tacoma holding its ground against newer competitors. However, since its updated, four-cylinder-only Tacoma launched, the model has seen even greater success.

This year, Toyota is poised to continue building on that momentum with impressive sales increases. However, the Tacoma isn’t the only model seeing a surge in sales; several other Toyota vehicles have also been having a standout year so far.

A fully loaded 2025 Toyota 4Runner comes with premium features, off-road upgrades, and advanced tech, making it one of the priciest SUVs available.

Tacoma Sales Surge

The new Tacoma has been on sale for just over a year, and its sales continue to soar. This quarter, Toyota sold 59,825 units, marking an incredible 177.5 percent increase compared to the same period last year.

Despite the large sales jump, the Tacoma is already a major seller, unlike other models experiencing high percentage increases. Meanwhile, the Tundra saw a slight dip in sales, down by 1.8 percent for the quarter.

While Toyota hasn’t shared a breakdown of hybrid versus non-hybrid sales, the hybrid Tacoma likely contributed to the 44.1 percent increase in electrified vehicle sales. Other models in Toyota’s lineup also contributed to this overall growth.

The Land Cruiser, one of Toyota’s most legendary models, continues to attract strong buyer interest, even in a downsized form. Both the American Land Cruiser and its Lexus GX twin had an impressive quarter.

Though the Land Cruiser wasn’t on sale this time last year, the Lexus GX saw a 139.5 percent increase, selling 9,239 units. Customers seem to be embracing the GX’s shift to a twin-turbo V6 hybrid from its previous naturally aspirated V8.

Similarly, the American Land Cruiser, now the smaller Prado variant with a hybrid four-cylinder option, also performed well. It sold 15,416 units this quarter, showing strong demand despite the changes.

While Toyota’s off-road models saw impressive growth, the bZ4X experienced the largest percentage increase. Sales of the electric SUV surged by 195.7 percent year-over-year, reaching 5,610 units.

Although the bZ4X’s sales are still modest, the nearly threefold increase is remarkable. Toyota’s significant price reduction of around $6,000 at the end of last year was a major factor in this boost.

If Toyota successfully launches an updated bZ4X with more power, range, and faster charging later this year, sales could rise even further. The price cut and upcoming improvements suggest strong potential for continued growth.
