TP-Link announced its updated smart home lineup at CES 2025. One of the new products is the Tapo PalmKey Smart Door Lock, which uses palm vein recognition technology to boost home security.
This technology reads the unique patterns of veins in your palm to unlock the door, making it a very secure option. The Tapo PalmKey has a contactless recognition system that works well no matter how your hands feel—dry, wet, or dirty—so you can easily and securely get into your home. The Tapo PalmKey is part of TP-Link’s new smart home product line and will work through its Tapo app.
The Tapo PalmKey Smart Door Lock uses a special technology that turns your palm vein patterns into a unique key. TP-Link claims this method is more secure for home entry because palm vein patterns are complex and hard to copy. TP-Link says that these palm vein patterns are so unique that they can even tell the difference between identical twins, making them safer than regular fingerprint or facial recognition methods.
Amazon One lets users pay using a palm print, but using the veins is pretty interesting. The company believes this contactless system works well in many situations where other biometric methods might not perform as effectively.
Keep in mind that the US government is still looking into TP-Link because of worries about national security, as it is a Chinese company. There are claims that their devices have vulnerabilities that have been used in cyberattacks linked to China. Multiple US agencies, including the Commerce, Defense, and Justice departments, are involved in the investigation, and there’s a possibility that TP-Link products might be banned.
TP-Link has not provided an exact release date, but it will soon be available for people to buy. A price was not provided either, but it should be available on the official website when ready.
