Trump’s review of UK tech laws raises threat of tariffs


President Trump has ordered a review of UK tech laws that could result in tariffs or other retaliatory measures.

Washington will assess laws such as the Online Safety Act and the Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act (DMCC) to see whether they discriminate against US companies or undermine freedom of speech. If they do, the US president may impose tariffs or other retaliatory measures.

The move was detailed by Trump in a memo titled “Defending American Companies and Innovators From Overseas Extortion and Unfair Fines and Penalties” and builds on the America First tech policy first outlined by JD Vance at the Paris AI conference.
