tvOS 18.5 just gave your Apple TV 4K a new feature for Dolby Atmos

Yesterday Apple released a variety of new software updates including iOS 18.5, watchOS 11.5, and macOS 15.5. Another fresh update, tvOS 18.5, was originally believed to be without any new features, but now we know it adds an enhancement for Dolby Atmos surround sound.

Wireless Audio Sync now supports Dolby Atmos in tvOS 18.5

Overall, tvOS 18.5 doesn’t change much about the Apple TV 4K experience. Largely the update is focused on bug fixes ahead of the larger tvOS 19 unveiling at WWDC.

But tvOS 18.5 does include one new feature to enhance surround sound playback.

Here are Apple’s release notes:

This update adds support for synchronizing Dolby Atmos playback to speakers over AirPlay or Bluetooth. To use, go to Settings > Video and Audio > Wireless Audio Sync.

This ‘Wireless Audio Sync’ feature has been around since tvOS 13, but never previously supported Dolby Atmos.

Previously, if you encountered Dolby Atmos issues when using a wireless AirPlay or Bluetooth surround sound setup, tvOS didn’t offer much help.

But with tvOS 18.5, there’s now an official remedy.

Following the wireless syncing process will ensure that your next Dolby Atmos experience delivers the kind of seamless surround sound you would expect.
