Twitter isn’t making enough money selling ads and user data – could soon ask users to pay real money for ‘stuff’

We all know that there is no such thing as a free lunch; at some point, the bill is served and payment is required in the form of cold hard cash. Which is fine, but getting charged twice? Nope. But, that’s what Twitter users are facing after years of giving their data to the social media network. It seems that selling user data and getting companies to pay for ads isn’t netting the company quite as much profit as the board members and stockholders would like, so there are plans afoot to start charging Twitter users hard cash to access certain features.

I mean, you have to feel for billionaires who are scrabbling about checking for spare change down the sofa so that they can pay for the chartered jet to Aspen or get a much-needed face tuck. It’s a hard life. But according to Bloomberg, Twitter is considering a number of ways to help those in need by asking its users to fork out some hard cash. Foie Gras and Dom Perignon don’t grow on trees, after all.

Twitter could soon charge for accessing exclusive celebrity content such as checking in to see if Kim’s ok after the big break-up with Ye or maybe getting tips on how to fast properly from @Jack. You may even get the option to pay for a nicer profile layout or perhaps even the ability to give cash tips to your favorite content creators (Remember to follow us at @TalkAndroid).

For the most part, it sounds like Twitter is planning to nickel and dime its users to oblivion. As for Tweetdeck power-users, it doesn’t look like you are getting away without a slight mugging either because Twitter is apparently looking at subscription options for the well-maintained client.

Let us know your feelings in the comments below about the possibility of having to pay for Twitter.

He’s been an Android fan ever since owning an HTC Hero, with the Dell Streak being his first phablet. He currently carries an OPPO Find X2 Pro in his pockets, a Galaxy Tab S5e in his backpack, and thinks nothing of lugging a 17-inch laptop around the world. When not immersed in the world of Android and gadgets, he’s an avid sports fan, and like all South Africans, he loves a good Braai (BBQ).
