So, you made the mistake of posting a tweet and now your Twitter handle is being quoted with every reply and quote, even though the conversation has changed topic entirely. Until now you’ve had no recourse other than sucking it up and ignoring the tens or hundreds of notifications or perhaps taking the nuclear option and deleting your account entirely. Along with apparently working on an Edit button, Twitter has announced that it’s experimenting with ‘Unmentioning’, a way for you to remove yourself from conversations without resorting to extreme methods.
According to the tweet embedded above, Twitter is working on a new Unmentioning feature that lets users remove themselves from conversations by tapping the three-dot menu button and selecting the ‘Leave this Conversation’ option. This will remove your Twitter handle from the original tweet and all subsequent replies whilst remaining visible. Other participants in the conversation won’t even be able to mention you in that particular thread and you’ll also stop receiving notifications for it.
Some users are already able to access the Unmentioning feature on Twitter for the web but the rest of us will have to wait for the social media company to release it to the masses when or if it decides that the experiment is successful.
