UAG Civilian Case review: Rugged good looks with a lightweight design

    UAG Civilian

We reviewed the Silicone Cover with S Pen for the Galaxy S21 Ultra and found it to something of a mixed bag and so we moved on to a different type of case, the UAG Civilian. Offering military-grade drop protection and a rugged yet lightweight design, the Civilian case from Urban Armor Gear retails at $49.95 and comes in a variety of colors, our unit is in the Olive colorway which features an orange accent.

Join us after the break for our thoughts on UAG’s Civilian case for the Galaxy S21 Ultra.

    Design

    • Impact-resistant Shell
    • Ultra-light
    • Over-sized Tactile Buttons

The Civilian case fits the Galaxy S21 Ultra like a glove, giving a tight fit that is easy enough to install and remove when necessary. Made from Polycarbonate and TPU, the case is pretty lite and although it does bulk out the Galaxy S21 Ultra a tad it’s still slimmer than the Silicon Cover with built-in S Pen storage.

The orange accents on the top edge and bottom corners of the case draw your attention, while the rear panel looks understated even with the UAG branding. A cutout on the rear panel helps the bulky camera housing of the Galaxy S21 Ultra to blend in a little while remaining a design element. Unlike Samsung’s Silicone Cover case, UAG’s Civilian case feels more robust around the charging port and control button areas which should result in increased longevity. The raised bezel protects the display when the phone is laid face down on a flat surface, and there’s enough space to fit a screen protector.

    How does it feel?

Sporting dual-layers of protection in the form of Polycarbonate and TPU materials, the case is certified to MIL-STD 810G and boasts UAG’s HyperCush technology to absorb bumps and knocks.

It’s a little slippy in the hand thanks to the smooth polycarbonate finish on the rear panel that doesn’t offer much in the way of grip. Thankfully, this is largely mitigated by the TPU bumper which also incorporates volume and power buttons, allowing a tactile, responsive touch. Both wireless charging and mobile payments are able to be used with the case installed, and all ports are easily accessible thanks to the precise cutouts.

    Worth it?

The UAG Civilian case fits the Galaxy S21 Ultra perfectly and despite its durable protection, it’s light and relatively slim. The added bonus is that it actually looks easy on the eye as well thanks to the inclusion of the orange accents on the Olive variant. I would have liked a gripper texture on the rear panel which is a little on the slippy side but overall it’s a case I’ve enjoyed using.

At $49, UAG’s Civilian case will both protect your Galaxy S21 Ultra and look good while doing so, and you can pick one up from Best Buy or UAG’s online store via the links below.
