Ubisoft Officially Embraces NFT, Launches First-Ever Playable Non-Fungible Token On ‘Ghost Recon Breakpoint’

    KEY POINTS

    • Ubisoft’s first NFT available on “Ghost Recon Breakpoint”
    • Players can avail of the NFT on the game’s PC version
    • Ubisoft Quartz runs on proof-of-stake blockchain technology

French video game company Ubisoft is making good on its earlier announcement of exploring blockchain-based, NFT and play-to-earn concepts and integrating these technologies on future releases as it announced that “Ghost Recon Breakpoint” will be the first game to feature non-fungible tokens.

The video game company revealed its first step into the exciting world of NFTs and blockchain technology in a news post released Tuesday. Ubisoft Quartz platform offers limited-edition cosmetic items that players can collect and sell to third-party marketplaces in exchange for cryptocurrency.

In “Ghost Recon Breakpoint,” the NFT items available on Ubisoft Quartz are called Digits, which are not only limited-edition in-game cosmetics but also individually unique. Each Digit comes with a serial number visible on the item.

Aside from that, the Ubisoft Connect username of the owner is embedded in Digit’s metadata. As the Digit is purchased by a new owner, their username is added to the metadata, which creates a history of ownership for the NFT.

To top it all off, Ubisoft made sure that each Digit features a video file, which shows how the item is being used in-game, in this case, in “Ghost Recon Breakpoint.” As part of its promotion, the company is giving away three drops of Digits for free on Dec. 8, Dec. 12, and Dec. 15.

This includes ‘Wolves’ skin for the M4A1 Tactical rifle, a helmet, and a pair of pants. To get these, players should play “Ghost Recon Breakpoint” on Ubisoft Connect for PC, must reach XP level 5 in the game, and must be at least 18 years old.

This promotion is only available in  U.S., Canada, Spain, France, Germany, Italy, Belgium, Australia, and Brazil.

Ubisoft plans to roll out a fixed number of items as part of limited editions, and so far, every player can only own one of each edition. The company also explained that its blockchain technology uses less power compared to other blockchains like Bitcoin.

Ubisoft Quartz runs on Tezos, which according to blockchain technical director Didier Genevois, is proof-of-stake blockchain technology. “This type of blockchain achieves the same results while using significantly less energy than proof-of-work protocols,” Genevois explained.

“To give you an idea, a transaction on Tezos is equivalent to 30 seconds of video streaming, while on Bitcoin, it is equivalent to watching one year straight of video streaming,” the technical director added.

Ubisoft Quartz will launch in beta, and the company has suggested plans for more Digits drops in 2022. However, for now, it is clear that the system is still in its early stages and seems like it is still experimental in nature.
