Unleashing the Power of Darktide’s Classes: A Review of Warhammer 40K

Warhammer 40K: The scripted heroes from Warhammer: Vermintide 2 have been removed in favor of player-created characters in Warhammer 40,000: Darktide. Players now have complete freedom over their heroes’ backgrounds, personalities, and classes.

This not only results in hilarious yells and witty back and forth between party members but also provides a welcome option for doing more with fewer people by having some characters take on two or more of the same roles.

While it’s great fun to hang out with most of these personalities, you won’t get a feel for how they perform in matches until you take them to a more incredible difficulty and give them access to their signature arsenals.

Fatshark will likely adjust the game’s balance and add new classes and archetypes as downloadable content. But for the time being, here is how the Darktide launch period class roster stacks up.

Veteran: Sharpshooter

The Veteran is an Imperial Guardsman who was taken prisoner and escaped because he was in the right place at the right time. The Veteran may be at the top of the heap of Rejects, but don’t feel too sorry for them.

Their fantasy’s essence is straightforward: they’re fantastic shots. They are currently proficient in every other area as well. The Veteran has access to various ranged weapons and the powerful melee tool, the chainsword, which can slice through waves of enemies like a hot knife through butter.

Their stance in battle draws attention to unique foes, making them effective against high-value targets like Poxbursters and Scab Snipers. As much ammo as they use compared to the Psyker’s damage output, they are also much less vulnerable. The Veteran is currently a safe bet no matter the level of competition.

Ogryn: Brute

A fascinating contrast to the Veteran is the Ogryn. The Ogryn excels at being a big tank, while the latter is a generalist. To combat the game’s most formidable foes (like the Daemonhost), his shield is invaluable, soaking up damage and preventing staggers.

As an Ogryn, there are few things more satisfying than blocking a chokepoint while your fellow soldiers rip apart the heretics in front of you with their sharpshooters.

The Ogryn have both massive strengths and massive weaknesses. Without a Veteran or Psyker’s help, he will have a hard time fighting off Snipers, Poxbursters, and Gunners on his own. Because his speed and agility don’t translate to strategic thinking, Ogryn is the best kind of team player.
