T-Mobile And Verizon Are Hungry For More, And US Cellular Might Be Their Latest Target
US Cellular is not a massive mobile carrier in the US, at least when put alongside the big three. As of the third quarter of 2023, US Cellular had a sub-1% market share, which is tiny in pretty much any industry. But in a market ruled by players like T-Mobile, Verizon, and AT&T, it is something.
However, the circle of life goes round and round, and this time, it is time for US Cellular to be claimed by the natural order of things. Sprint and Metro PCS are two mobile carriers that were bigger than US Cellular before they were acquired by T-Mobile years ago. US Cellular has been a survivor of all these acquisitions for a long time, but it seems that T-Mobile and Verizon are working on a joint acquisition deal for the fourth-placed US carrier, as the carrier has been seeking carriers for certain aspects of its business.
The objective for this acquisition might be for T-Mobile and Verizon to get even more of the wireless spectrum in the United States, as it seems that US Cellular may have coverage in specific areas that others can’t seem to get their boots dirty in.
The Joint Deal Isn’t Because The Carriers Are Best Friends, But To Work Around Breaching Antitrust Regulations
The big three mobile carriers in the US are not very forgiving once they decide to add a smaller carrier to their portfolios, however, there comes a point where there’s been enough acquisition for the government to put a foot in. After all, T-Mobile literally just added Mint Mobile to its portfolio. While this acquisition might mean better service and coverage for T-Mobile and Verizon users, it also means less competition, and competition is always a good thing for consumers.
T-Mobile is looking to get its hand on some of US Cellular’s wireless spectrum licenses and take over a degree of operations, and they’re planning to put down $2b for that. The Wall Street Journal, which originally broke the story, didn’t say much about what Verizon wants, but I’d bet that additional wireless spectrum licenses will be a part of the deal.
Either way, the hope for consumers is that if this deal manages to pass through successfully, T-Mobile and Verizon will use their overwhelming power (which they’ve been amassing like Thanos did Infinity Stones) for good. After all, less competition means that these companies can get away with less thoughtful prices.
