Virginia Tech-Rutgers Review: What Happened To The Run Defense?

Well, here’s your game summary:

Happy Rutgers player with a Hokie defender who must hang out with genies in his spare time.

Seriously, how does that happen?

As for non-surprises, the outcome was about what I expected. I had Rutgers rumbling along to a 33-17 win; I figured Tech’s quarterback would either be new or injured, which increased the risk for turnovers, and Rutgers’ running game would expose Tech’s linebackers and defensive backs in run/pass conflicts. The surprises were in the details. The Tech offense worked better than I thought it would, and Rutgers didn’t land the knock-out deep shots I worried about.

And the run defense I thought would struggle…well, it struggled, and then it went into the fetal position.
