Volkswagen insists that the future of the EV is fast (and, just maybe, also furious), seeking to demonstrate that the vehicle class can be made more ‘sporty’ with the ID.X Performance unveiled during the recent ID. Treffen Locarno 2023 meet-up event.
It is not clear whether the concept car and the ID.7 GTX mentioned earlier are one and the same – then again, Volkswagen never mentioned 20-inch alloy wheels “with a central lock and size 265 racing tires” for the older prototype – or a carbon wing, for that matter.
Nevertheless, the ID.X Performance has both, not to mention suspension “with especially stiff springs” lowered by 60 millimeters (mm, presumably compared to the ID.7). The liberally red-accented interior is similarly replete with bucket seats and a dedicated center console-mounted 6.69-inch screen for the car’s Vehicle Dynamics Manager. It controls things such as the new “boost function” conferred by an MEB paired with a new dual motor system.
It consists of a “permanently excited synchronous motor” for rear-wheel drive augmented by a secondary synchronous motor for front-wheel drive. The resulting AWD set-up is rated for an output of up to 411 kilowatts (kW, equivalent to 558 horsepower), as opposed to 210kW in the new ID.7 Pro.
The ID.X Performance is also equipped with 200kW charging. However, it remains that such a sedan is far from a production line, although Volkswagen now hints that it may be something for driving enthusiasts to look forward to as the automotive industry moves toward an all-electric future.
