Wanted: SquareTrade for crimes against the Galaxy S21 series

    Galaxy S21

Waiting for the year’s hottest phone (so far) to drop can be wearisome, but now that the Galaxy S21 series is on the shelves in retail stores and online SquareTrade has dropped all three handsets and posted the results. That’s right, SquareTrade drop-tested the Galaxy S21, Galaxy S21+, and the top-of-the-range Galaxy S21 Ultra from heights of six feet on to an unsuspecting sidewalk. As you can imagine, the results aren’t pretty and we’ve got video evidence of the crime and the results for you after the break.

As someone who just took ownership of a Galaxy S21 Ultra a few days ago, the video and photographic evidence of the mistreatment of the phones makes me sad. Really. It’s just like when a classic car gets destroyed in a movie. Anyway, enough of my emotional torment.

SquareTrade put all three models through the same two drop tests, the first of which was face-down with the second focusing on the rear panel.

    • Face-Down Drop Test: When dropped six feet onto the sidewalk, all three Galaxy S21 phones were damaged. The Galaxy S21 fared the best, with a cracked screen and raised glass. The screen of the Galaxy S21+ cracked, loosened, and malfunctioned. The Galaxy S21 Ultra, the largest phone in the range, suffered the most damage and could not be used after one drop.
    • Back-Down Drop Test: The Galaxy S21, which has a polycarbonate rather than the glass back, held its own in the back-down drop test and had only minor cosmetic damage—even after being dropped twice. The Galaxy S21+ and Galaxy S21 Ultra, which have glass rear panels, both shattered after one drop. However, the new “Contour Cut” metal rear camera housings on all three phones were intact, and their cameras were fully operational.

SquareTrade notes that the results across the whole Galaxy S21 series are an improvement over the Galaxy S20 where the rear camera housings are concerned, which isn’t too surprising considering its size. On a side note, having said that, the camera housing grows on you and becomes less noticeable the more you use the phone.

The Galaxy S21 Ultra came off the worst, unfortunately, with the base model’s polycarbonate (glasstic) rear panel unsurprisingly the hardier material, showing barely a scratch.

He’s been an Android fan ever since owning an HTC Hero, with the Dell Streak being his first phablet. He currently carries an OPPO Find X2 Pro in his pockets, a Galaxy Tab S5e in his backpack, and thinks nothing of lugging a 17-inch laptop around the world. When not immersed in the world of Android and gadgets, he’s an avid sports fan, and like all South Africans, he loves a good Braai (BBQ).
