Sony’s next smartphone in line is the big bad Sony Xperia 1 VI. It’s going to be a flagship, so expect it to check all the maximum values in all categories. It’s also bound to try to do a lot in the camera department, as most of Sony’s recent smartphone attempts have been heavily focused on that.

Now, we know exactly when we can expect the Xperia 1 VI to be unveiled, and that will be on May 17th. That’s less than a month away, so that’s not a ridiculously long amount of time to be kept waiting. It’ll start at 7 PM in Japan, but that is 6 AM EST, so you might have to catch the highlights or replay the stream once you’ve woken up. It’s going to be a pretty exclusive event, with only 100 people in attendance physically. However, there should almost definitely be a live stream for the event, which should pop up closer to the launch date.

The Xperia 1 VI Is Going To Be A Lot Less “Odd” Than Its Predecessors

One thing that’s set Sony’s recent flagship devices apart from other flagships on the market is the screen. Sony opted for some unpopular choices for the screen specifications of these smartphones. The first thing you’ll notice when you see one of these in the wild (or even in photos) is that the Xperia 1 line consists of unusually tall phones. Sure, aspect ratios got taller at one point, but Sony is a rare specimen with its 21:9 aspect ratio.

On top of that, there have been smartphones with 4K screens released in the past. Every single one of them is a Sony phone, and that includes the five Xperia 1 devices that have been released so far. It’s a great achievement on paper, but it doesn’t mean much to users in real-world use because you can’t notice the difference between it and 1440p.

Well, the rumors say that both of these quirks will be shed with the Xperia 1 VI. The aspect ratio is going to get squashed to a more conventional 19.5:9 and the screen will drop the ridiculous resolution and go for 1440p instead. Both of these moves are sensible and I’m happy to hear Sony is making those changes.

The phone is going to run on a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 and is rumored to have a triple camera setup with 48MP sensors all around, with one being a 3x periscope telephoto. I’m looking forward to Sony’s camera performance this year since I used to be a big fan of them for that exact reason.
