What’s the difference between Samsung’s Galaxy S23 FE and S24 FE?

The Samsung Galaxy S23 FE and Galaxy S24 FE share a lot in common, which makes sense since one is designed to succeed the other. The S23 FE launched in October 2023, while the S24 FE followed a year later in October 2024.

Both phones are good options for anyone trying to enter Samsung’s Galaxy ecosystem with a low budget. If you’re still deciding on which one to get, here’s a comparison guide to help you choose the better model.

Design

But for a few differences, you could easily mistake the Galaxy S23 FE and S24 FE phones. The S23 FE has a 6.4-inch flat Dynamic AMOLED 2X display with even bezels, set in an aluminum frame having rounded corners, with Gorilla Glass 5 on the front and back. The back has a triple-camera setup with the lenses arranged vertically and slightly sticking.

Meanwhile, the S24 FE’s screen is 6.7 inches from corner to corner. Because the corners are rounded, the visible screen area is 6.5 inches. It also comes in an armor aluminum frame and has the same vertically arranged triple-camera design on the back. But the bumps stick out more than the ones on the S23 FE.

Also, the phone uses the tougher Gorilla Glass Victus 2 and the design matches more with the Galaxy S24 series. Both FE phones have an in-display fingerprint sensor and are IP68-rated, meaning they are water and dust-resistant. The S24 FE is heavier than the Galaxy S23 FE, although the difference is minimal. The newer model weighs 214g, while the predecessor weighs 209 grams.

Display

Screen area is everything and the S24 FE has a larger screen compared to the S23 FE. Its display size is 6.7 inches, with 6.5 inches visible because of the rounded corners, versus the 6.4-inch display of the S23 FE, which is actually 6.3 inches visible.

Both phones have Dynamic AMOLED 2X technology, 1080 x 2340 resolution (FHD+), 16 million color depth, and a 120Hz refresh rate. In simpler words, they provide a vibrant, sharp, and smooth display with rich colors.

The Galaxy S24 FE is also brighter than the S23 FE, with a peak brightness of 1900 nits over the 1450 nits on the S23 FE. This matters because a brighter screen makes it easier to see your phone outdoors, especially in the sun. It also helps when watching videos or looking at pictures with a lot of contrast.

Performance, battery, and memory

The Galaxy S24 FE uses Samsung’s own Exynos 2400e processor, which is a Deca-Core chip with four additional cores. The S23 FE’s Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 is an Octa-Core processor. The S24 FE’s CPU speeds are also slightly higher at 3.1GHz and 2.9GHz for its top-performing cores, while the S23 FE’s CPU speeds are at 2.99GHz and 2.4GHz.

Technically, the S24 FE is better because of these higher core counts and faster peak speeds. As for battery, the Galaxy S24 FE lasts a little bit longer because of its 4700mAh capacity. On the other hand, the S23 FE has a 4500mAh battery.

On the Galaxy S23 FE, you’ll get approximately 101GB of usable storage. Unsurprisingly, 27GB is already taken up out-of-the-box by the operating system and other system-related files. The available storage on the S24 FE is around 105GB.

Every gig counts, especially when you’re working without an SD card slot as both phones have none. But if you’re careful about managing your storage, even the S23 FE’s 101GB should do just fine.

Cameras

The Galaxy S23 FE and Galaxy S24 FE both have the same rear camera setup: a 50MP main sensor, a 12MP ultra-wide lens, and an 8MP telephoto lens. The aperture values are identical, where they have F1.8 for the main camera, F2.2 for the ultra-wide, and F2.4 for the telephoto.

So their performance in light and depth of field is pretty much the same. They also come with Optical Image Stabilization (OIS) and 3x optical zoom, so you get clear, stable shots even when closing in on objects or shooting in low light.

Meanwhile, the S24 FE adds an optical-quality 2x zoom thanks to its Adaptive Pixel sensor that produces sharper images for mid-range zoom shots compared to the S23 FE. The S23 FE records videos in 8K at 24fps, but the S24 FE improves them to 8K at 30fps.

Then there’s slow motion where the S23 FE offers 960fps at HD and 240fps at FHD. The S24 FE, on the other hand, does 240fps at FHD, 120fps at FHD, and even 120fps at UHD, so you get way better slow-motion quality.

Software and features

The Galaxy S23 FE and Galaxy S24 FE run Android 14 with One UI 6.1.1. So you’ll have access to popular features including Circle to Search, Live Translate, Interpreter, and Photo Assist. Even though the S23 FE originally launched with Android 13, you can update it to match the S24 FE’s software.

The main difference between the two phones is how long they’ll receive software updates. The S24 FE will get seven years of Android and security updates, same as the S24 series. It’ll be supported all the way through Android 15 to Android 20.

The S23 FE will only get four years of Android updates and five years of security updates. Since it’s already received Android 14, it will only get updates up to Android 16.

Which Galaxy do you fit in?

With all that we’ve seen so far, the Galaxy S23 FE around $600 still stands as a value packed phone. Likewise, the S24 FE is a worthy investment with some improvements like a larger, brighter display, a slightly faster processor, and longer software support. The price difference of $110 justifies these upgrades if you can afford it. If you’re good with the basics of the S23 FE, you still have a good phone in your hands.
