Apple has released over 20 models of iPhones since the original iPhone launched all the way back in 2007. But it isn’t always easy to figure out which iPhone is the latest to come out or which new model you should upgrade to.
No worries, you can use this handy guide to see the latest models of the iPhone. We’ll explain each iPhone’s features, why you should buy them, and how you can tell them apart from previous models.
How to Check Which iPhone You Own
Apple releases a slew of new iPhones every year, and it isn’t always easy to tell one model apart from another. Still, you may want to know what iPhone you own before upgrading or buying a protective case. And while Apple has an iPhone Identifier on its Support page, it’s often easier to just look up the model number on Google.
To check your iPhone’s model number, go to “Settings,” open the “General” tab, and press “About.” Scroll down to see your iPhone’s model number and Google it to check which iPhone you own. If you’re using an iPhone 7 or older, you can also find the model number inscribed on the back of the phone near the charging port.
An iPhone’s model number tells you which type of iPhone it is and what year it was released. If you need to check your iPhone’s storage capacity, go back to the “About” page and look for the word “Capacity.” If you’re using an iPhone 7 or older, you can also find the storage capacity on the backside near the written model number.
iPhone 14 and 14 Plus (2022)
Released in 2022, the iPhone 14 and 14 Plus are the latest devices in what we’ll call Apple’s “standard” iPhone series. This release is notable for one key reason—it ditches the iPhone Mini for the larger iPhone 14 Plus. Customers can now purchase a large-screen iPhone without buying the expensive Pro Max model.
Aside from their screen size, battery life, and price tag, the iPhone 14 and 14 Plus are technically identical. The iPhone 134has a comfortable 6.1-inch display (same as the iPhone 14 Pro), while the iPhone 14 Plus has a bigger 6.7-inch display (same as the iPhone 14 Pro Max).
Additionally, the iPhone 14 lineup introduces a “Photonic Engine” to improve photo quality in low-light settings. It’s the first iPhone release to offer satellite connectivity for emergency messaging, and it removes the option to use a physical SIM card, instead opting for eSIM.
Identifying the iPhone 14 and 14 Plus can be tough, as they look nearly identical to last year’s 13-series iPhones. They’re just a fraction of an inch taller and wider, and they have marginally larger camera humps. If you need to identify an iPhone 13 or iPhone 14, I suggest checking the model number.

iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max (2022)
Released in 2022, Apple’s iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max are the newest devices in the “Pro” series. They’re a major upgrade over last year’s release, packing a new pill-shaped Face ID cutout with “Dynamic Island” software. Essentially, the notch is smaller and now doubles as a pop-up notification panel.
The iPhone 14 Pro also introduces a 48MP main camera, which is a huge upgrade from the traditional 12MP lens. It also uses a “Photonic Engine” to improve photo quality in low-light settings. And like the standard iPhone 14, the iPhone 14 Pro offers satellite emergency messaging and ditches physical SIM cards for eSIM.
The iPhone 14 Pro has a 6.1-inch display (the same size as the standard iPhone 14), while the iPhone 14 Pro Max has a 6.7-inch display (same as the iPhone 14 Plus). Both phones feature a steel frame and stain back for a premium look and feel.
Identifying the iPhone 14 Pro is a breeze. Just look at the Face ID selfie camera. These are the first iPhones to use a pill-shaped camera cutout instead of the dreaded “notch,” so they look pretty unique.

Apple’s iPhone SE 2022 is the newest iPhone in the SE series. It eschews some new features like Face ID and an edge-to-edge display for the sake of affordability. It’s very similar to the iPhone 8, with a Touch ID, Home button, a 4.7-inch Retina HD display, Apple Pay support, and a single 12-megapixel sensor (which supports Portrait mode).
Still, the iPhone SE features a fantastic A15 Bionic chip with the Apple neural engine for performance that’s similar to the standard iPhone 14. It also supports 5G connectivity and uses a larger battery than its predecessor, the iPhone SE 2020.
This iPhone SE 2022 is a fantastic option for those who are on a budget or who prefer to use Touch ID over the Face ID system found in the iPhone 12. And because the SE fits in iPhone 8 cases, people upgrading from the iPhone 8 don’t need to buy any new accessories.
The iPhone SE is easy to tell apart from the iPhone 14, as it sports an old-fashioned design, a small LCD display, and a physical Home button. Still, the iPhone SE 2022 looks nearly identical to the iPhone SE 2020. If you need to identify an iPhone SE, check its model number.
