It’s been over a year since Apple announced the HomePod mini would get third-party support for music apps. Still, Spotify has yet to add support for the smart speaker. This has upset many Spotify users, and some of them are even threatening to switch to other platforms.

Let’s take a look and find out what users think.

What’s the Deal With Spotify and the HomePod mini?

Back in 2020, during Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference, the company announced that it would add support for third-party music streaming services to the HomePod mini.

Alongside this announcement, Apple confirmed that platforms like Amazon Music, Pandora, and iHeartRadio would be some of the first apps to add support to the smart speaker. Some people quickly pointed out that Spotify wasn’t part of this list, but there was no apparent reason why.

That was back in June of last year. It’s now over a year since Apple made this announcement, and Spotify still hasn’t added third-party support to the HomePod mini yet, and there’s no telling if the company is even working on it right now.

Many Apple and Spotify users have been waiting, but their patience is growing thin. Many users started to voice their anger in the Spotify community forums. Some users have described Spotify’s actions as “childish behavior,” while others threatened to switch to other platforms, including Apple Music, if Spotify didn’t add HomePod mini support.

Unfortunately for Apple and Spotify users, this isn’t the first time Spotify is late to the party when adding support to Apple devices.

Spotify took almost three years after Apple released the Apple Watch to finally release an app for the device. What’s more, it took them another couple of years to add other features like streaming from your Apple Watch and downloading songs to listen to them offline.

Likewise, Spotify confirmed that it’s working on AirPlay 2 support, but it was delayed, and we don’t know as of right now when it’s actually coming out.

Is It Time to Switch?

As of right now, we don’t know how much time will Spotify take to release HomePod mini support or if they’re working on it right now. But based on the previous history, it might take a while. One thing’s for sure; you might want to consider other music streaming services. Fortunately, there are a lot to choose from—and even some free options to get you started.
