If the Wifi is not connected, then it makes perfect sense that you cannot use the internet. However, if the Wifi is connected and there is still no internet, finding the issue can be jarring.
Luckily for you, there are some well-used and easy steps to help you get started on this dilemma. You’ll realize that, in most cases, fixing this problem is not a big deal and can be done in a few minutes.

1- Check if Your Internet Provider is Facing an Outage
The first step is the most obvious one. Check if your internet provider has announced any outages that might be causing this issue. You can easily call your internet company or check the status online.
If you have mobile data, it is a great way to go to your internet provider’s website. State your problem to them through live chat. They will generally be very helpful. Or you can look for your specific location to see the status of internet connectivity in the area.
If you frequently face this problem with your ISP, think about switching to another provider. For this purpose, you can check out Glimp to compare many broadband networks.
If that’s not the case, then you can always restart your router as well as your devices. This can help in case of a new automatic update of the wifi driver.
2- Perform a factory Reset of Your Router
After ensuring there is no network outage, you can assume that the problem lies with your router. Try turning it off and on a couple of times; often, this works. If not, then completely resetting the router should be our next step.
Double-check for internet outages by searching for wifi outages in my area before proceeding to a factory reset.
Here are the steps to perform a factory reset on a router:
- At the back of your router, find the reset button
- Take a paper clip or a pin to press the reset button for fifteen seconds
- The power will be turned off and then get back on
- Voila! The factory reset is done.
Warning
Before resetting, be aware that a factory reset will restore the default settings on your router. All your customized settings will completely disappear. But if the internet is not working, then it’s an essential step.
3- Check for Network Permission on Your Device
Do not forget to search for an isp outage in your area that might cause disconnectivity. But if the internet is still not working even after step two, then the router is not the problem. The problem may have been caused by network permissions.
Network permission is crucial in the public network but is also essential in-home connections.
A home internet connection has an identifier called MAC or Media Access Control that gives permission to certain devices to connect with the internet.
If there is a problem with permissions on your device, then the MAC won’t allow the Wifi to work. In order to fix that, you have to see if the system shows a deny or approve mode.
Here are some steps to figure this out:
- Press the Windows icon on your computer
- On the search bar, type and look for “cmd”
- On the command prompt app, right-click and select “run as administrator”
- Right-click again, and a black command prompt window will open. Type in “ipconfig” on the screen and press enter
- On the black screen, your IP number will show. Copy this IP number that looks like 192.168.X.X
- Paste this number into your web browser’s search bar to open the router management console
- On the back of your router, you will find a printed user name. Write this username in the router management console. The password is most likely “admin” if you have not changed it
- This will open the setting panel. Now ensure that in the MAC address filtering feature, you are not denying the service through a filtering rule
- This process should give your device permission to access the internet

Still No Luck?
At this point, you have tried almost all the ways to ensure that your connection is restored. If the internet still does not work, then there is a possibility that either your computer or router has some technical fault.
Computer hardware issues also cause internet disconnection. Your best solution is to call a computer or hardware expert and let them figure out the issue. Once the cause is found, the problem can be solved.
