Will LG still issue software updates if it exits the smartphone market?

    LG

No, the headline isn’t a joke, LG does sometimes roll out software updates to its smartphones – it’s just that it doesn’t happen all that often. Having somehow garnered a reputation worse than Motorola for software support, it’s feared that with LG expected to announce the demise of its smartphone division sometime in April, the electronics company may also quit issuing software updates to the phones it’s already produced.

According to leaker Tron, LG has been unable to sell its smartphone business and as such, will announce the closure of its Mobile division as early as Monday, April 5.

Just to recap, the reason that LG’s smartphone business is set to be canned is that it managed to lose money for 23 consecutive quarters, and despite launching the enigmatic Wing and Velvet during 2020, sales just haven’t picked up and negotiations to sell the division appear to have ceased. The remaining employees are likely to be reassigned to a home appliance factory in Changwon, South Korea as LG restructures itself.

Besides the almost certain canning of the much-anticipated Rollable smartphone, LG is also said to have canceled other upcoming launches, which makes sense from the brands’ point of view in that there’s no point in throwing more good money down the drain.

As for the continuation of supporting its existing smartphones with OS updates, Tron also claims that LG will cease the development of software despite the company being likely to say otherwise. All in all, it’s a sad state of affairs and if LG truly is closing its mobile division, the Android world will be the poorer for it.
