Microsoft has a long list of improvements on the way to Windows 11, many of which improve the gaming experience for PCs. Soon, the Windows HDR Calibration app will come to Windows, allowing gamers to improve color accuracy and consistency on the best computer monitors that support HDR. Microsoft is also working on an Optimizations for windowed games feature that will allow older titles to work with Auto HDR, Variable Refresh Rate, and with less lag.

Microsoft detailed its plans for the Windows HDR Calibration app in the release notes for Windows 11 preview build 22557:

The Windows HDR Calibration app is coming to Windows PCs soon – you’ll be able to improve color accuracy and consistency on your HDR display. For easier access, you’ll be able to access this app via the Windows settings under System > Display > HDR You may see an early access point in HDR settings in this build, but as the app is not live yet, it will simply lead you here.

The Optimizations for windowed gaming setting was also announced on February 16, 2022, but in a different blog post. Once rolled out, the feature will improve the gaming experience for older games in windowed mode by reducing latency and adding support for Auto HDR and Variable Refresh Rate.

Windows 11 already has an Auto HDR feature, but until now, the optimizations did not help older windowed games.

“This new optimization specifically applies to Windowed and Borderless-Windowed games because when you’re running in Fullscreen, a similar optimization already exists, and this new setting brings a consistent experience no matter which mode you are running in,” explained Microsoft. “You don’t need to worry about DX12 games as they already take advantage of the new presentation mode.”

The Optimizations for windowed gaming feature is only available for Windows Insiders in the Dev Channel at this time. Specifically, PCs will need to be on Windows 11 build 22545 or newer to test out the new setting.
