If you wish Windows Paint had a few more features to help you create and edit, we have good news. Over the last year, we’ve received regular updates to the decades-old software, and this week, Microsoft announced three new Paint features making it easier to create stickers and select objects for editing.
Now that Microsoft is taking Windows Paint seriously and pushing out regular updates, you’ll be happy to hear that it’s packed with helpful AI art tools, generative erase controls, and more that you’d typically find in Photoshop or Pixlr.
Windows Paint is now rolling out three more updates that you’ll love, including two that take advantage of AI for ease-of-use. In the latest update to Paint (version 11.2504.451.0), you’ll find Sticker Generation. Like many features lately, this new AI-powered feature lets you type any prompt and instantly create custom stickers.
Fire up the Copilot menu, tap the new Sticker Generator button, ask for a “Cat wearing sunglasses,” a horse driving a car, or anything else your creative mind can think up, and it’ll instantly appear.
Like most AI art generators, Microsoft Paint generates four different stickers for you to choose from, making it easy to find exactly what you’re looking for. Tapping the sticker will apply it to your current canvas. Or, you can save it for later and see it by hitting the same sticker generation button in CoPilot.
Next, this latest Paint update introduces a new smart selection tool using AI called “Object Select.” Similar to the auto-selection tools found on high-end photo-editing software or our smartphones, Paint now makes it easy to select specific elements to make edits on the fly.
Object Select uses AI to recognize the different lines or colors on an object and instantly selects the right area for an edit. My Samsung Galaxy phone has a similar feature that I love, and it’ll be great getting it in Paint. Just remember that it won’t always get it right, and it may take a second attempt to make the ideal selection.
However, Microsoft mentioned that the new Sticker generator and Object select tools are only available on Copilot+ PCs. Furthermore, to use the sticker generator, you’ll need to sign in with your Microsoft account so it can save the stickers for later.
And finally, the third new Windows Paint feature is a new “welcome experience” and guide that’ll give you neat tips and tricks, show you how everything works, and detail some of the many new features from the last year. This new dialog box will pop up and share a detailed list of all the new features and possibilities in Paint, making it helpful for new and returning users.
The latest Windows Insider update also delivered new features and controls to the Snipping Tool and added generative AI to Notepad. Basically, AI is making everything a little better.
