Wireless Charging And A Big Battery? OnePlus Open 2 Sounds Great

Foldables are more mainstream than they have ever been and their appeal to the general audience is just bound to get more intense. The book-style options are for power users, smartphone enthusiasts, and people searching for a status symbol. The clamshells are popular among more casual users or those looking for something cheaper.

OnePlus has taken exactly one shot at the foldable game, with the OnePlus Open, and it was received pretty well for a first attempt. We’re more than due for a sequel and it looks like it is going to bring some much-needed improvements over OnePlus’ first rodeo.

The OnePlus Open 2 Might Bring Wireless Charging, Fixing Its Notable Absence On Its Predecessor

In 2024, wireless charging is a given in any smartphone that wants to be taken seriously. Foldables sort of get a pass when it comes to what is considered “standard” for them, as the form factor certainly requires some compromises. In the early days, no one expected water resistance from a foldable device, but times have changed, and now that’s a prerequisite if you really want to compete.

Even towards the beginning of the era of book-style foldables, wireless charging wasn’t exactly some kind of uncommon luxury. The very first Samsung Galaxy Z Fold had wireless charging after all. That was why it was pretty confusing that the OnePlus Open, which was released almost exactly a year ago, left that feature out.

Thankfully, for those who love wireless charging, the OnePlus Open 2 is rumored to be bringing that feature to the table, according to Digital Chat Station. It’s essentially a must if the Chinese manufacturer really wants to compete with the others. The competition in that market segment is tougher than it has ever been, so a single unticked box could mean bad.

OnePlus Has An Odd Relationship With Wireless Charging

You might not believe me, but if my count isn’t wrong, there are only five devices that OnePlus has ever released that come with wireless charging capabilities. They only started to embrace the feature starting from the OnePlus 8 Pro, and even devices as recent as the OnePlus 12R and the OnePlus 11 series somehow omitted it.

I’m not exactly sure why the company hates wireless charging so much, especially because it doesn’t seem to be absent to allow for something that other OEMs don’t have.

The OnePlus Open 2 Is Expected To Have A Much Bigger Battery And A Bigger Screen

The OnePlus Open 2 is coming out of China, and if you’ve been following the trends, you might be able to guess that the battery capacity is going to be getting a substantial overhaul. The OnePlus Open was able to fit a total capacity of 4,805mAh between both halves of the device, but the OnePlus Open 2 is going to push that up by 900mAh to 5,700mAh. I’m a fan of this current trend.

From the same post from Digital Chat Station, it also looks like we can expect a larger screen, though there are no specifics. There’ll be a triple 50MP camera setup, the Snapdragon 8 Elite, and a very heavy focus on slimness. Overall, I’m looking forward to it.
