XGIMI is padding out its lineup with two new ultra-portable projectors, the MoGo 3 Pro and the Elfin Flip. Both are available today and, surprisingly, support Netflix without any sideloading.
At $499, the MoGo 3 Pro is the more expensive of these two projectors. It’s also a recognizable sequel to XGIMI’s MoGo 2, at least in name. While previous MoGo projectors resemble Bluetooth speakers, the MoGo 3 Pro looks more like a thermos. It’s a small, 2.43-pound metal cylinder with a lanyard.
MoGo 3 Pro’s design is odd but innovative. When in its thermos-like form, the MoGo 3 Pro is extremely portable, and its lens element is protected, so it’s perfectly happy in a backpack or purse. When unfolded, the projector is clearly a projector—it has a tilting lens, integrated speakers, and built-in Google TV software. And although there isn’t an integrated battery, you can run the projector off of a USB power bank via USB-C cable.
I’m also surprised by some of this projector’s functionality. Yeah, the 1080p resolution isn’t great, the lack of optical zoom is disappointing, and the maximum 450 ISO lumens of brightness means that you’re limited to dark environments. But the 27ms game mode is fantastic, as are 90% DCI-P3 color coverage and HDR10 support. XGIMI’s auto-keystone, auto-focus, and automatic screen alignment features are great to see in a projector of this size. Plus, a new “ambient light” mode lets the MoGo 3 Pro move and pulse to music, making it an interesting party machine.
MoGo 3 Pro is also notable for its use of Google TV, which is a departure from the Android TV software seen in most XGIMI products. There are several differences between Google TV and Android TV, but the main benefit here is that Netflix is included by default and doesn’t need to be sideloaded (Netflix has a weird relationship with Android TV projectors—I’m not sure why Google TV is any different, but I won’t complain).
The $399 Elfin Flip takes several cues from the MoGo 3 Pro. It’s an affordable ultra-portable projector with a unique design that shields the lens when not in use. But instead of being shaped like a thermos, the Elfin Flip is wedge-shaped. It’s basically a handheld projector that swivels within in a plastic frame.
As for the Flip’s specs—well, it’s slightly worse than the MoGo 3 Pro, but it’s still solid enough for an impromptu movie or game night. Brightness caps at 400 ISO lumens, video resolution is 1080p, and there’s 113% Rec.709 color coverage. You get HDR10 support, a 27ms low-latency game mode, auto keystone correction, auto focus, and automatic screen alignment.
The Elfin Flip also uses WebOS, which is a bit of a surprise. Some customers may prefer Google TV, but WebOS supports Netflix and is a solid choice for a smart TV software (especially on modest hardware like this), so I don’t see it as a problem.
I should note that the original Elfin projector, which is now discontinued, lacked the swiveling design of the Elfin Flip but offered a much brighter image.
The MoGo 3 Pro and Elfin Flip are available today for $499 and $399, respectively.
