Speaking on Thursday at the institute, Mr Gates congratulated China for eliminating malaria in the country, and recognised Chinese scientists for working to fight the disease around the world.
Mr Gates also met Beijing Mayor Yin Yong on Thursday, the Beijing Daily said. Mr Yin credited the institute with achieving “breakthroughs” in recent years and vowed continued support, the report said.
In a Wednesday tweet announcing his arrival in Beijing, Mr Gates said he was “excited to visit with partners who have been working on global health and development challenges” with the Gates Foundation.
