Like everything else lately, YouTube Premium keeps getting more expensive. And while I love YouTube Premium, which delivers ad-free videos and a YouTube Music subscription, it needs more options or pricing tiers. Luckily, YouTube is testing a new two-person plan for couples or roommates.

Currently, YouTube Premium costs $13.99 per month in the United States, or you can spend $23 on a family plan. And while that’s nice, tons of people don’t need an entire family bundle. Thankfully, according to Android Authority and Money Control, the company is actively testing out another option where two people can share a Premium account.
One of Spotify’s best options is its Duo plan, which allows a married couple, roommates, or just two people in the same household to share a streaming account without buying the more expensive family plan. We’re seeing a similar option tested in India, France, and other regions for YouTube Premium, which would be a welcome change.
From what we’re seeing, the new YouTube Premium shared plan would let both users use their own individual Google accounts. This way, you’ll get your own watch history, continue watching on YouTube, and custom-tailored musical tastes. Basically, it’s a full YouTube Premium account for two. Other perks include ad-free YouTube videos, offline playback, smart downloads, and everything else that comes with a Premium membership. Both members must be 13 years of age or older.
Google recently confirmed the two-member trial and said, “We’re experimenting with new ways to provide greater flexibility and value to our YouTube Premium subscribers, including offering a two-person Premium plan option, allowing two people to share a subscription at a reduced cost.”
Honestly, with the price of everything going up lately, I think it’s a great idea for these brands and services to test different bundles. With how expensive YouTube TV is, I’d love to see channel tier bundles. The same type of approach works for music streaming.
We don’t have too many details regarding this potential change for now, but it certainly makes sense for certain households. Furthermore, the pricing we’re seeing in India will likely differ from that in the United States, so we’ll have to wait for more details. That said, if Google offers something like a two-person plan for $17.99 per month, it could be a great way to save a few bucks without upgrading to a family tier. However, if you have a household of three, the family plan would likely remain the best option.
There’s no mention of whether this trial will expand to more regions, but it would be a great way to access the best of YouTube’s video and music services at a reduced cost. Google is also toying with a new YouTube Lite plan that targets ad-free YouTube without the Music subscription.
