T-mobile has made a huge un-carrier move

T-Mobile’s prepaid plan is a wallet-friendly solution that lets you pay for your phone service upfront. You can choose a plan, use the service for as long as you need, and simply stop paying if you no longer require it. When you’re a college student relying on student loans, or an upcoming creator living on a fluctuating income, the plans are a lifesaver — at least, they were until recent developments.

Normally, T-Mobile charges $10 for a starter kit that includes the SIM card you need to activate your phone. If you have a eSIM compatible phone, you can activate it for free. It makes sense since eSIMs eliminate the need to manufacture, package, and distribute physical cards. Activating them is a simple process that you can do electronically without requiring assistance from your mobile carrier.

Reddit user, Electronic-Quail4464, has given us the inside scoop on how T-Mobile plans to increase its current charges. In the coming days, all prepaid plan users will be subject to a one-time Device Connection Charge (DCC) for activations and upgrades. You’ll pay $25 for voice lines and $5 for Beyond The Smartphone (BTS) lines. The charges apply to you whether you use a pSIM or eSIM, as well as device purchases for the Connect by T-Mobile plan.

There are more charges on the way

DCC charges will also affect all devices, including T-Mobile phones, tablets, smartwatches, and Bring Your Own Device (BYOD). It’s a service where you can bring a phone you already own and activate it on T-Mobile’s prepaid or postpaid plans. The charges will also apply in-store, online, and via chat and other customer support channels.

Usually, topping up your prepaid balance in a store is free. All you had to do was tell a representative what you wanted and provide personal information for them to process your request. Now, you must settle a Payment Support Charge whenever you need to in a physical T-Mobile store. The Mobile Report says it’ll cost $5, starting April 25th. 

Try as much as T-Mobile can to justify these changes with streamlining user experiences, customers aren’t having it. Many of them have taken to online forums to air their frustrations. Frankly, these increased fees are more of a burden on any prepaid user. For starters, you lose the convenience of in-store support and free top-ups. Also, DCC makes starting a new line or upgrading expensive. All these efforts may cause the plans to look less attractive compared to providers without such fees and push users to switch sides.
