Proton Pass Will Search The Dark Web For Your Crappy Passwords

Know when your data has ventured too far to the dark side

Proton announced its new Pass Monitor tool today and plans to integrate it into the Proton Pass password manager. Pass Monitor allows you to evaluate the security status of your online credentials and provides immediate alerts if your data is compromised.

Pass Monitor allows users to evaluate the security status of their online credentials and provides immediate alerts if their data is compromised. This proactive approach is crucial for preparing our users against the inevitable phishing attacks that follow such breaches, ensuring that their digital identities are protected across all fronts.

It will also house an Inactive 2FA menu that shows you every account that doesn’t have an extra layer of protection. If you’re a paid user, you can protect them with a built-in authenticator in Proton Pass.

Another feature you can’t do without is the Pass Health tool that all Proton users can access. The tool checks for any weak passwords and even missing two-factor authentication (2FA) to give you an overview of your security — kinda similar to what Google’s Password Check already does.

You’ll see the critical passwords in red, and those in potential danger indicated in yellow. Green tells you that your passwords are secure. 2FA checks (without the authenticator) and Pass Health are part of the free plan.

Pass Monitor will also use Dark Web Monitoring to alert you when your email addresses or other credentials appear in leaked databases or criminal forums. You need to be a paid subscriber to use it along with other premium features.

Which Proton plan do you need to access premium Pass Monitor features?

Currently, Proton only offers two individual paid plans. Pass Plus starts at $4.99, while Pass Unlimited starts at $12.99. You need Pass Plus if you want to use Dark Web Monitoring and Proton Sentinel. Proton Sentinel safeguards your account in the rare event that your account details get leaked. The company boasts that it has thwarted 15,000 takeover attempts since it launched in August 2023.

On the other hand, the free plan lasts forever and offers interesting perks too. For example, you can use Proton Pass with unlimited devices, alongside 2FA and Pass Health features.

To add, Pass Monitor keeps your data locally and not in encrypted vaults in the cloud. Because it’s on your device itself, you have greater control and security. You’ll also access password management features without an internet connection.

Proton will roll out these Pass Monitor updates automatically to current users soon.
